Strategies for minimizing your prescription drug costs

It’s important to know how much your medications cost before you fill your prescriptions. To find out the cost of your current medications, log in to your Caremark.com account, select Plan & Benefits then click Check Drug Cost & Coverage.

Prescription medications can be expensive, but adhering to your doctor’s treatment plan is important for good health. At SilverScript (PDP), we understand that many Medicare recipients are on a limited income and need to keep out-of-pocket medication costs as low as possible. The tips below will help you get the most value from your SilverScript prescription drug coverage to minimize the cost of your medications.

Choose a preferred pharmacy and you may save up to 50%1

Preferred pharmacies have agreed to offer lower copays and coinsurance amounts than standard pharmacies. There are thousands of locations in the SilverScript Choice (PDP), SilverScript Plus (PDP) and SilverScript Allure (PDP) Preferred Pharmacy Networks,2 including all CVS Pharmacy locations and many other chain, regional and local pharmacies. Use the Pharmacy Locator tool on SilverScript.comand look for the teal colored heart icon to find a preferred pharmacy location near you, or call the number on the back of your Member ID card and follow the instructions to find a pharmacy through the automated phone system.

Consider lower-priced medications

SilverScript formularies include thousands of drugs. In some cases, there may be a less expensive brand or generic drug than the one you are currently taking that is appropriate to treat your condition. (Generic drugs have the same active ingredients in the same strength as their corresponding brand name drug.) Discuss all of your treatment options with your doctor to ensure you are taking the medications that best fit both your health needs and your budget. If you and your doctor do choose to change medications, your doctor will need to provide you with a new prescription.

How can I find out what drugs may be less expensive but still effective for my treatment?

Log in to your Caremark.com account, click on Plan & Benefits then select Prescription Savings Guide. Follow the easy instructions to find out if there are different drugs for your treatment that may cost you less. You will need to discuss trying a suggested drug with your doctor, as he/she will need to write a new prescription should they determine a less expensive drug is appropriate for your treatment.

SilverScript and/or Caremark.com recommended a different drug than the one I’m already taking. Do I have to change to the recommended drug?

No. Only you and your doctor can make decisions about your treatment. SilverScript and/or Caremark.com sometimes suggest different brand or generic drugs that may cost you less and still provide effective treatment for your condition. You may want to discuss these drugs with your doctor to see if a less expensive treatment may be an option for you.
